Right now, I’m pumping the ‘FIDLAR – I DON’T GIVE A F*CK – B-Sides Vol 1 (Full Album of B-Sides, Covers, Rare & Live)’ a fan-made mix on YouTube. It’s a goddamn gem, man.

FIDLAR TECHNOLOGIES 350 Research Parkway, Davenport, IA 52806 800-747-4600. “Almost Free” is the title track off FIDLAR’s 2019 third album. The song began as a demo recorded by guitarist Elvis Kuehn. The group tried to write vocals but ultimately took producer Ricky. You probably recognise FIDLAR from their song By Myself which dominated the triple j airwaves for a while, and also came in at #12 on 2019’s Hottest 100. At the time, part of me expected this but part of me also thought it was weird that this was the only FIDLAR song that I knew. Seems crazy looking back on it.

Having only heard ‘By Myself’ I always thought they were an Aussie band. And who could blame me right? I bet I wasn’t the only person. I mean, the song’s about getting wasted. They also have two like a version covers, Xanny by Billie Eilish (which is set to be released as part of a collection of ‘like a version vinyls next month) and Red Right Hand which was originally by Australian rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The mere fact that they were on triple j made me assume they were Australian, though as it turns out, FIDLAR are based in Los Angeles.
Fast forward to February this year when I played GTA V for the first time and heard FIDLAR’s song Cocaine in the game. “I know this band!” I thought to myself (though I also knew most of the punk bands in the game and even had a few songs in my library). Anyway, it was still cool! I liked this song as well as By Myself and their triple j covers, so eventually I decided to give their 3 albums a listen.
Sure enough, I fell in love with the punk/garage/surf/skate rock band. They sing about drug (ab)use, breakups, society, that sort of thing. Vocalist Zac Carper said in a triple j interview that the ‘classic FIDLAR way’ is to have sad lyrics, sad songs, but happy feelings. And to be honest that’s true for the majority of their discography. In the same interview, Carper also said that the first time he heard the phrase ‘cracking one open with the boys’ was from none other than Australia’s own Dune Rats! While FIDLAR aren’t Aussie, ‘By Myself’ might not exist if it weren’t for our beloved Dunies.
In listening to their albums, one thing I noticed was that while ‘By Myself’ sounds very similar to other music triple j would be playing, it’s actually quite distinct from FIDLAR’s other music. The album it comes from, ‘Almost Free’, has a more varied sound compared to their previous two albums which have a very similar punk/skate vibe between them. If you like By Myself and their like a versions, you owe it to yourself to give their other stuff a listen.
But FIDLAR’s official discography is only the tip of the iceberg for this band. They have a few singles on their YouTube which you won’t find on streaming services, including Are You High (ft. The 90s). Though this particular song didn’t make it onto any albums, according to a YouTube video I watched about the band’s history, this song was actually inspired by Violent Soho’s album ‘WACO’. Which actually seems kinda obvious now that I think about it.
There’s a plethora of songs to be found on FIDLAR’s YouTube that you won’t find on any albums on Spotify or Apple music (but you can find some on Soundcloud). Based on my credible sources of YouTube comments and Wikipedia, some of these songs were released as Japanese version exclusives, or limited mp3’s and demo CD’s. One song was only released as physical music on a split 7″ vinyl with The Orwells (also featured in GTA).
But even then, there’s some songs that can’t be found on any official FIDLAR accounts. Safety concers spotify desktop app. Thankfully, some people have gathered FIDLAR’s ‘secret songs’ and created YouTube mixes compiling their rare songs.
Now, one could say these are ‘secret’ songs, but in reality a lot of them are on the band’s official YouTube channel. Still secret from streaming services I guess, and there’s still some songs out there that’ll require a bit of tracking down if you wanna listen to em.
While many of these songs are reminiscent of FIDLAR’s early days of playing house parties, with a very rough sound, there’s a lot that are more chill in comparison, while still keeping the sad lyrics, sad songs, happy feelings element to them. There’s also some nice covers of Elvis, Ween, Blink and the Rolling Stones out there. Spotify download playlist list. The ‘I DON’T GIVE A F*CK’ B-Sides mix was the first one I found. I was overjoyed when I did, and the bloke who uploaded it had another whole video mix of B-sides, covers, live, and rare songs on Vol 2- ‘GOT NO MONEY FOR WEED’.

Of course, the existence of these mixes raises the issue of copyright and publishing someone else’s songs on your own channel, presumably without permission. The guy who put it together is honest about that, and as a fan I’m conflicted between listening to these B-sides when I know no money is going to the band from these mixes. However, I still really want to listen to the songs, and ultimately I can go see them live (which could be a long way off at the moment) or buy some of their merch online to support them.
It’s not every day that are great rock band comes around, and while music taste is obviously subjective, I think it’s hard to resist the allure of songs that were quite literally made for house parties several years ago. Whenever I start listening to a new band, I’m daunted by the amount of songs I have to sift through. But with FIDLAR, after a month or so I was longing for more, and these secret songs hidden away on YouTube were a blessing. I’ll be eternally grateful to the super fans that put together albums out of these secret B-Sides from this band we Aussies know from triple j.
